- It was written by Robert Hazard back in 1979
- Hazard fronted a local Philadelphia band called Robert Hazard & the Heroes that in spite of a national record contract didn't make much of a splash outside their native Philadelphia
- In 1982 the song was covered by the then all but unknown Cyndi Lauper, and the rest was history
- Cyndi Lauper was born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper on 6/22/53 in Brooklyn New York & raised in Queens
- She appealed to both the pop crowd and the punk crowd, and the success of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the first single from the album "She's So Unusual" is undeniable
- The song went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1983
- It was #1 on the US dance charts, and also hit #1 on the singles charts in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, and Norway
- The video of the song became MTV's Video of the Year for 1984
