Lady Marmalade - Song Lyrics

  • Written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan in 1974
  • Originally recorded by Kenny Nolan's band The Eleventh Hour, but the song did not chart
  • Recorded by LaBelle, consisting of Patti Labelle, Nona Hendricks, and Sarah Dash
  • Song was a #1 Top 40 hit in 1975, & also hit #1 on the R&B charts
  • Remade again in 1998 by UK group All Saints, it reached #1 on the British charts
  • Remade yet again in 2001 for the soundtrack to the movie Moulin Rouge
  • The remake featured Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink, Lil' Kim, and Missy Elliot
  • The remake version hit #1 on the Top 40 charts in 2001
  • It was only the ninth song of the rock era to hit #1 with two different versions
  • Composer Bob Crewe set a rock era record as well.  He had a #1 hit with "Big Girls Don't Cry" that he wrote for the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons back in '62, giving him a span of 39 years between #1 songs

He met Marmalade down in old New Orleans
Struttin' her stuff on the street
She say "Hello, hey Joe, you wanna give it a go

And getcha getcha ya ya da da,
Getcha getcha ya ya here
Mocha chocolata ya ya
Creole Lady Marmalade."
She say, she say
"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?"

He sat in her boudoir while she freshened up
And he drank her magnolia wine
Upon her black satin sheets
I swear, he started to freak
When she said

"Getcha getcha ya ya da da
Getcha getcha ya ya here
Mocha chocolata ya ya
Creole Lady Marmalade."
She said, she said
"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?"

Touchin' her skin, feelin' silky smooth
Color of cafe au lait
Made the savage beast inside
Roar until it cried
"More, more, more your ya ya"

Now he's back home
Doin' old nine to five
Livin' his gray flannel life
But when he turns off to sleep
He gets memories that creep

Getche getcha ya ya da da
Getcha getcha ya ya here
Mocha chocolata ya ya
Creole Lady Marmalade
She said, she said
"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?"
