- One of the songs most closely aligned with the term
"Southern Rock"...it truly is an anthem of southern rock
          & roll

        - Written by Ed King, Ronnie Van Zant, & Gary
          Rossington

        - The original members of the band all went to school
          together in Jacksonville, Florida

        - The gym teacher & coach of Robert E. Lee High
School where Gary Rossington was enrolled was named Leonard
Skinner.  Skinner insisted that Rossington cut his hair, and when
Rossington eventually quit school over the issue, they renamed the
band Lynyrd Skynyrd, with the "Y"s thrown in to avoid a
          lawsuit

        - On 10/20/77 Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines died in
a plane crash in Mississippi. Gaines' sister, Cassie, who was a backup
singer with the group, also died

        - The reference to Neil Young was in response to the
song "Southern Man" the Young wrote critical of Alabama

        - There was a good natured feud between the artists for
some time, & on the album "Street Survivors", Ronnie Van Zant can be seen wearing a Neil Young T-shirt

        - The "Swampers" are a group of studio
musicians that worked at Muscle Shoals' Fame studio

        - George Wallace was the governor of Alabama when the
song was released, & liked the song so much he made the band
honorary Lt. Colonels in the state militia

        - The song reached #8 on the charts in 1974, it
was the band's first Top 40 hit

        - Although many of the band's songs were (and continue
to be) extremely popular and recognizable, they only had 5 top 40 hits
          in their career.

Sweet Home Alabama - Song Lyrics
One, two, three...
Turn it up
Big wheels keep on turnin
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the southland
I miss ole 'Bamy once again and I think it's a sin
Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm comin home to you
In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor
(Boo hoo hoo)
Now we all did what we could do
Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth
Sweet home Alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Here I come, Alabama
Alabama, ahhhh, Alabama...
Now, Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers
And they've been known to pick a song or two
(Yes they do)
Lord, they get me off so much
They pick me up when I'm feeling blue
Now how about you?
Sweet home Alabama,
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home Alabama
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Sweet home Alabama, home sweet home, baby
Where the skies are so blue, and the Gov'nor's true
Sweet home Alabama, Lord, yeah
Lord, I'm coming home to you
Yeah, yeah
My, Montgomery's got the answer
