  • Written by in 1959 Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Belafonte, Jr. 3/1/27 in Harlem, New York City), Alan Greene, and Malvina Reynolds
  • Harry Belafonte was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 1989
  • In 2000 he won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, along with Woody Guthrie, John Lee Hooker, Mitch Miller, and Willie Nelson
  • Belafonte's political visibility has been significant and controversial, calling President George Bush a terrorist and the Department of Homeland Security the Gestapo, as well as supporting Venezuelan dictator & terrorist supporter Hugo Chavez.  Nevertheless, it is the MUSIC to which one should enjoy, not the angry anti-American rhetoric.
  • The song Turn Around was recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1964 on the album "Time To Think"
  • In 2000 The Kingston Trio were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame
  • The only version of the song to ever reach the Billboard Top 40 was in 1963 by "Dick & DeeDee", who reached #27
  • "Dick & DeeDee" consisted of Dick St. John (born Richard Gosting, who died in 2003, reportedly after falling from the roof of his home), and Dee Dee Sperling
  • They scored a total of 5 Top 40 hits over their short stretch of fame from 1961 through 1966
  • Their careers also featured numerous appearances on the hit TV show Shindig
  • In 1965 the song was also recorded by Freddie and the Dreamers, an English pop group fronted by Freddie Garrity, who gave birth to the dance craze "The Freddy"
  • Note: *dirndl* is a full-skirted dress with a tight bodice. It is a diminutive of Old High German "Dirne"-girl
  • Pronounced "DEERN-dull" in English.
  • One of the most popular Father / Daughter Dance songs for weddings.  With a minor gender change of the lyrics Oracle can also do this song as a Mother / Son Dance
