I'm A Believer - Neil Diamond / Monkees / Smashmouth
Song Lyrics / Chart History / Artist Information

  • Written in 1966 by Neil Diamond
  • Diamond attended Brooklyn's Erasmus High School, where he was in the chorus with another star to be, Barbara Streisand, yet they didn't really know each other until years later
  • He was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame in 1984
  • Publisher Don Kirshner, hearing the Diamond song “Cherry Cherry,” asked him if he had a similar song that could be used by a group of his called the Monkees.  Diamond played him “I’m a Believer,” a tune he had intended to use on a future album. Kirshner took it, and by the end of 1966 the Monkees’ version was spending the 1st of its 7 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top 40 Pop chart
  • The Monkees were a "Made For TV" pop group
  • The first show aired on 9/12/66 on the NBC television network & lasted two seasons and a total of 58 episodes
  • The Monkees consisted of British born David Thomas ("Davy") Jones (vocals/percussion/guitar), Hollywood native George Michael ("Micky") Dolenz Jr. (vocals/drums/keyboards/guitar), Texas born Robert Michael ("Wool Hat") Nesmith (guitars/vocals), & Peter Halsten ("Peter Tork") Thorkelson (bass/keyboards/banjo/guitar/trombone/vocals), who was born in Washington DC
  • Fashioned after The Beatles, it's ironic that Monkees lead singer Davy Jones actually appeared with the cast of Oliver on the Ed Sullivan Show the same night the Beatles made their famous appearance
  • Re-released by Smashmouth in 2001 on the Shrek Soundtrack, their version climbed to #9 on the charts

Song Lyrics - I'm A Believer

I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
That's the was it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
What's the use in tryin'?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Love was out to get me
That's the was it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
I'm in love, I'm a believer!
I couldn't leave her if I tried.

Yes I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
Said, I'm a believer,
yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah,
Said, I'm a believer, yeah
