Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffett
Song Lyrics / Chart History / Artist Information

  • Margaritaville was written and originally performed by Jimmy Buffett, (born James William Buffett 12/25/46 (Christmas Day) in Pascagoula Mississippi)
  • Buffett's backup band is called the Coral Reefer Band
  • After graduating from college Buffett worked for Billboard Magazine in Nashville Tennessee.
  • While working for Billboard he broke the story of the breakup of the popular bluegrass team of Flatt & Scruggs
  • Performing only about 20-30 times a year (usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays), Buffett concert tickets typically sell out in minutes.  He remains one of the top box office draws of any touring artist.
  • Buffett now calls Key West Florida his home, and his laid back style of music has been dubbed "Gulf and Western"
  • Margaritaville was a #8 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart in 1977
  • The song also hit #1 on the Billboard Magazine Adult Contemporary chart
  • An anthem for all parrotheads, (Jimmy Buffet fans), it is also the name of a chain of stores and cafe's opened by Buffett
  • It was the first song released as a single from the album "Changes in Latitudes Changes in Attitudes"
  • It is by far the most recognizable song in all of Jimmy Buffett's repertoire, and is loved throughout the world

Song lyrics - Margaritaville

Nibblin' on sponge cake,
Watchin' the sun bake
All those tourists covered with oil.
Strummin' my six string, on my front porch swing.
The smell of the shrimp beginning to boil.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

Don't know the reason, been here all season,
Nothin' to show but this brand new tattoo.
But it's a real beauty, a Mexican cutie,
How it got here I haven't a clue.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know hell, it could be my fault.

Blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop-top,
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home.
But there's booze in the blender and soon it will render,
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's my own damn fault.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
Yes I know it's my own damn fault.

NOTE:  There is a fourth verse to the song that was originally cut from the single that is sometime performed in concert.  It goes like this:

Old men in tanktops,
Cruisin' the gift shops,
Checkin' out Chiquitas down by the shore.
They dream about weight loss,
Wish they could be their own boss,
Those three-day vacations can be such a bore.

Wasted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt.
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's my own damn fault.
